Gary Kelly High Profile CEO of Southwest Airlines Stephanie Bleam October 19, 2011 Mr. Gregory Haughton Introduction Gary Kelly serves as the Chairman of the board, President, and Chief Executive Officer at Southwest Airlines. A 23-year veteran who becomes CEO in 1989, Gary has worked closely with southwest legendary cofounder and Chairman Emeritus Herb Keller and President Emeritus Colleen Barrett to build the nation’s largest airline in terms of passengers and the undisputed Low-Fare Leaders. Gary has received awards and recognitions, including being named one of Business Travel News’ 25 Most Influential†¦show more content†¦Gary began his career at Southwest Airlines as Controller, moving up to Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance, then Executive Vice President and CFO, before being promoted to CEO and Vice Chairman in July 2004. Prior to joining Southwest Airlines in 1986, Gary was a CPA for Arthur Young amp; Company in Dallas and Controller for Systems Center, Inc. Gary was among the top accounting students at the University of Texas and had his pick of jobs after graduation. He chose Arthur Young amp; Co., where he was assigned to the Dallas office, a feisty little start-up airline named Southwest. Kelly became familiar with the airline through friends at the firm who handled the account. In 1983, Kelly left Arthur Young to join a start-up computer services company in Dallas as CFO. A few years later, he beat hundreds of competitors for the job of controller at Southwest. Over the years, Kelly has become well-known and well-liked at Southwest s Dallas headquarters. Now, he s turning his attention to the rest of the 33,000 workers scattered around the USA.
